Managing thoughts and emotions at work: harnessing the power of the mind

in this session, you’ll learn about stoicism, emotional intelligence + the power of thoughts

Does this sound familiar?

  • You know you’re not supposed to worry about things you can’t controlbut you find yourself doing just that.

  • You have many “middle of the night” moments where you are wide-awake at 3am worrying about everything under the sun.

  • You made a mistake on an important project and saying to yourself “it’s just a job” isn’t bringing peace of mind.

  • The onslaught of bad news in the media is getting to youfrom the pandemic to war to the rising cost of living to recession. Plus, your team is stressed out and it affects you.

  • You worry about job security given the state of the economy and automation of jobs. And, post-lockdown office life (and the distractions that come with it) are interfering with your performance.

  • Your “inner critic” gets you down - for example, even though your presentation was well received, you can't stop thinking about the points you didn’t get across.

  • You wonder what “emotional intelligence” really means and how to put it into practice.

  • You sometimes struggle to identify precisely how you are feeling

  • You hear a lot about “empathy” ….but aren’t sure if you’re doing it right.

  • You’re quick to prioritse others at work. In turn, you have a hard time saying no and you have difficulties carving out time for deep work.

  • You’ve read countless books on personal growth, learned how to meditate and you even know how to do breathing exercises to calm your nervous system, but you just can’t seem to apply that knowledge consistently during turbulent times.

Why I’m The Right Speaker for You

  • I’m a lawyer at a big bank so I get the pressures you’re under. I know first-hand about how to survive and thrive in the corporate world and will share these ideas with you.

  • I will offer guidance but I won’t tell you what to do.

  • I appreciate that we are all individuals and that what works for one person, may not work for another.

  • I recognise that organisational cultures vary and that take that into account when delivering a session.

  • As a highly sensitive person, I’ve had to learn to manage my own thoughts and emotions - we teach best what we need to learn!

  • I will help you to tap into your power and wisdom to light up your own pathway to success.

What you’ll learn in this session:

As knowledge workers in the corporate world, we are typically excellent thinkers – we know how to analyse problems and craft arguments. That said, how often do we stop and think about the impact our thoughts are having on our emotions and behaviours?

How often do we think about how we are crafting our own careers and lives?

This session will offer you an opportunity to do just that – to take a step back to then move forward on the path to self-mastery. The session will draw upon wisdom from Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius who, in Meditations, reflects on the critical act of retreating into the self to skillfully confront emergencies, which in his day included natural disasters, famine, barbarian invasions and plague. This timeless wisdom will be applied to the modern workplace for you to use in both ordinary and extraordinary times.

By the end of this workshop, you will have…

  • Clarity on the relationship between our thoughts and feelings.

  • An understanding of the “circle of control” and an enhanced ability to stop worrying about things you can’t control.

  • 3 strategies for enduring hardship.

  • An overview of “emotional intelligence” and techniques to increase self-awareness and sensitivity towards others.

  • 3 tools to cultivate optimism so that you can feel lighter and brighter at work.

  • 4 strategies to manage fear, anxiety, and anger so that you have more peace of mind and can get on with your day and be effective.

  • An introduction to mindfulness and meditation.

  • 3 key ideas on how to deepen empathy and compassion.

  • 2 methods to protect yourself from “emotional contagion” so that someone else’s mood doesn’t ruin your day.

  • Inspiration on how to be a positive influence on others.

  • An understanding of the power of visualisation.

  • A guided meditation experience.
