What is Diversity of Thought?

Diversity of thought (also called cognitive diversity) means the mix of different perspectives, knowledge, attitudes, information styles and capabilities that enhance an organisation’s capacity to solve complex problems, to innovate, to make better decisions and to manage risk. It guards against groupthink and is a source of competitive advantage. Demographic diversity contributes to diversity of thought, but doesn’t guarantee it. In other words, if many different voices all say the same thing, you don’t have true diversity of thought.

Fostering diversity of thought requires trust and a culture of psychological safety where people are listened to and constructive challenge is welcomed. It is about listening to and learning from each other for the benefit of all. Easier said than done (because we naturally gravitate to those who think like we do), but it’s possible!
